Wattle Ridge to Yerranderie - TBA
This was a reconnaissance walk to see if we could find Belloon pass because we were planning to walk from Yerranderie to Wattle Ridge. I find it comforting to know the end of a route after a few days of walking. It takes the pressure off having to find the track and risk of having to walk back. When pressure is on is when we tend to make bad decisions. As it turned out it was easier to find the pass coming from Yerranderie – but we didn’t know it at the time. We started on the two day walk. It was a relatively easy walk along a fire trail down into the valley. There was only one tricky part where the fire trail was over grown for about 20 meters. Another obstacle later on was a monster rock blocking the trail. Apparently this has caused the trail to be closed for several years. After about half a day’s walk we came to the clearing that used to be an old homestead. We continued on and a few hours later and two creek crossings afterwards we arrived at a clearing would camp at. After a short rest we then explored East up the mountain range looking for the track. We found lots of indistinct tracks but could not pick a definite track to the pass. We tracked to what we thought was a saddle in the mountains but still could not find a definite track. We later found that the pass was to the south of where we thought it was – and looking at the mountain range silhouette it didn’t look as if the pass would be anywhere near there. It was getting dark so we headed back to our campsite unsuccessful in our attempt to find the pass. We camped overnight. It was evident that the campsite had not been used for at least 12 months or more because there a lot of leaves and debris all around the campsite which we had to clear before we could light our camp fire. We buried our food supplies so that on the walk in a few weeks’ time from Katoomba we would not have to carry as much. There was also a good water supply as there was a creek nearby. Next morning headed back to wattle Ridge in an uneventful fire trail walk.
